Simantonnayana

Baby Shower Ceremony

5th–7th month of pregnancy

Significance

Simantonnayana (also called Seemantham) is the Vedic equivalent of the modern baby shower. Performed in the later months of pregnancy, it is a joyous family ceremony celebrating the imminent arrival of the child and surrounding the mother with positive energy, prayers, and blessings.

What Happens During the Ceremony?

The husband parts the wife's hair three times with a porcupine quill, a bunch of Udumbara fruits, and three shoots of Kusha grass, symbolising protection and auspiciousness. Relatives and women sing songs, offer gifts, and bless the mother. A Homa is performed for the longevity and health of mother and child.
